When Mark and Tom read the Mayor of London’s report… they were shocked to discover how few creative hubs there were in Waltham Forest offering affordable rent to artists. Meeting so many artists living in the borough the team knew there was an appetite for a space so that people could work closer to where they lived rather than travelling to Hackney, Islington or Camden.
In 2015 we launched a Spacehive crowdfunding campaign to secure £XX to repurpose an abandoned building near Wood Street, E17. We used street art to raise awareness of the campaign within the borough and attended numerous local events to engage with residents and organisations.
We successfully secured £18,000 from the Mayor of London and reached our target thanks to the huge support from the public. LBWF matched the target and we got to work on plans for turning the building, formerly known as The Dragon building, in to Wood Street Studios.
Wood Street Studios opened its doors in June 2016 and became home to a range of local organisations - including videographers, artists, graphic designers and architects.
